Goals and philosophy
Our vision
The Blue Mountains East Timor Sisters Group aims to improve the lives of women in East Timor now while contributing to the ongoing leadership and empowerment of East Timorese women.
We will develop sustainable projects that directly benefit East Timorese women through the fostering of partnerships, friendship and connection between Blue Mountains women and East Timorese women.
BMETS will function as a dynamic group that embraces the contribution of its members and supporters, acts swiftly to pursue project goals, actively encourages innovation and takes opportunities to increase community understanding and commitment to East Timor. We will set structures in place that will ensure that we make a commitment for the next ten years – 2005 – 2015.
Our philosophy
BMETS holds these values
- Working for and maintaining friendship relationships with known women in East Timor
- Working through our friends in East Timor – they will set directions that we follow
- Being decisive and action oriented while still planning carefully
- Respecting our members and treating each other well
- Ensuring that involvement in BMETS is satisfying for all of its members
- Underpinning projects with community development ideals such as empowerment, local control and long term sustainability
- Women in East Timor will determine projects and deliver these;
- Having fun, making our functions and meetings enjoyable and participatory
- Working in partnership (with other associated groups and government) will increase our effectiveness and ability to meet our goals and has value in itself as an ethical way of behaving . Considering and working within agreed principles set by affiliated international women’s organisations (should these fit within our own values)
Our goals / objectives
BMETS has these goals:-
- To contribute to the improvement of the lives of women in East Timor now
- To increase women's leadership in East Timor by fostering individual womens leadership, education, employment / enterprise and rights
- To raise funds and seek opportunities for the initiation of projects that will improve women’s lives
- To increase the awareness of the Blue Mountains community of issues facing women in East Timor. To set structures in place that will ensure the survival of the BMETS for the next ten years
- To function well as an inclusive, friendly, effective group of volunteers, impassioned through mutual goals of supporting women in East Timor
